Interventional Radiology Services

The Interventional Radiology specialists at RAA bring advanced training and years of experience in minimally-invasive, image-guided procedures. Our physicians and physician assistants are dedicated to providing compassionate and skilled care for patients using leading-edge technology to perform targeted treatments. Our radiology team offers a variety of services at the flagship Piedmont Atlanta Hospital.

Our Services

Interventional Oncology

Interventional oncology (IO) uses minimally invasive procedures performed under image guidance to diagnose, treat, and relieve symptoms of cancer and cancer-related problems.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Hepatic Metastases

  • TACE
  • Hepatic ablation

Renal Cell Carcinoma

  • Renal ablation

Osseous Metastases

  • Osseous ablation and augmentation
  • Osseous metastatic embolization

Hepatobiliary

Interventional radiology techniques are used to treat multiple disorders of the liver, the bile ducts, and the portal venous system.

Portal Hypertension

Biliary Obstruction

  • Biliary drain placement
  • Biliary stenting

Renal

For patients suffering from high blood pressure due to renal artery disease, renal tumors, or chronic kidney disease, interventional radiology offers minimally invasive treatment options.

  • Renal artery angioplasty and stenting
  • Angiomyolipoma embolization
  • Renal ablation

Women’s Health

Women experience unique medical conditions such as menopause, pregnancy and reproductive issues, so they may need specialized diagnostics and treatment throughout the stages of life. Interventional radiologists offer treatment for issues caused by uterine fibroids and enlarged periuterine veins.

Men’s Health

From resolving urinary flow problems to improving infertility, interventional radiology is an option for improving men’s health. Interventional radiology is a safe, minimally invasive, nonsurgical option for men experiencing abnormal enlargement of the prostate or veins in the scrotum.

Arterial

Arterial disease is usually caused by hardened arteries called atherosclerosis. Minimally invasive interventional radiology techniques to treat arterial disease have become standard of care.

Arterial Stenosis

  • Arterial angioplasty
  • Arterial stenting

Arterial Thrombosis

  • Thrombolysis

Venous

Venous disease including clot, chronic occlusion of veins, enlarged veins, and pain or ulcers from venous insufficiency can be treated using minimally invasive interventional radiology techniques.

Venous Thrombosis

  • Thrombolysis
  • Thrombectomy

Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement

Inferior Vena Cava Filter Removal

Central Venous Stenosis

  • Venous angioplasty
  • Venous stenting

Varicocele and Pelvic Congestion Syndrome

  • Varicocele embolization
  • Ovarian vein embolization

Pulmonary

Interventional radiologists treat patients with hemoptysis (coughing up blood) usually due to chronic lung problems, and also treat patients with vascular malformations called AVMs in the lungs.

Hemoptysis

  • Bronchial artery embolization

Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation

  • Pulmonary AVM embolization

Dialysis

Patients that have chronic kidney disease may need hemodialysis. Interventional radiologists provide minimally invasive treatments for blocked or narrowed arteriovenous grafts (AV grafts) and AV fistulas. This increases the longevity of the dialysis access. Additionally, we offer services to place and maintain dialysis catheters.

  • AV graft and fistula angiograms, angioplasty, and stenting
  • Tunneled hemodialysis catheter placement

Musculoskeletal

Patients with joint pain, bone tumors, and soft tissue tumors have many minimally invasive interventional radiology treatments available to them when previously surgery was the only option. Knee embolization can lengthen the time until a knee replacement is necessary, and bone or soft tissue tumors can be ablated to cure pain.

Knee Osteoarthritis

  • Genicular artery embolization
  • Genicular nerve ablation

Osseous metastasis

  • Osseous ablation and augmentation
  • Osseous metastatic embolization

Vertebral Compression Fracture

Pain

Through precise targeting using advanced imaging guidance, interventional radiologists can treat specific nerves to relieve pain with nerve blocks and neurolysis.

  • Celiac plexus nerve block and neurolysis
  • Pudendal nerve block
  • Ganglion impar block
  • Intercostal nerve block

Gastrointestinal

Patients suffering from chronically bleeding hemorrhoids can be treated with a nonsurgical technique called embolization as an alternative option to invasive surgery. Interventional radiologists also perform minimally invasive placement of enteral access (gastrostomy or gastrojejunostomy tubes) without the need for surgery or general anesthesia.

  • Gastrostomy tubes
  • Gastrojejunostomy tubes
  • Hemorrhoid artery embolization

Biopsy

A biopsy is the process of collecting cells from the area under investigation so they can be studied under a microscope. We offer safe, minimally invasive, and precise targeting techniques using imaging guidance such as ultrasound or computed tomography (CT).
